When I picked up Mary from school this afternoon, her teacher asked if I had a few minutes. We headed back to the classroom and Mrs. Carlin asked Mary to read a very short (primer) book. Mary did great with it, hardly stumbled over a word. Mrs. Carlin then explained that this was a book Mary had not seen before and that it was at the reading level of a mid-year first grader!
She was assessing the class today, Mary and two of her classmates all tested at the 1st grade level. They could have been higher, but that was the most advanced reader Mrs. Carlin had. She plans to have 2nd grade readers on hand when she re-evaluates at the end of the year, will be interesting to see where Mary lands!
